I recently went on a vacation to Costa Rica and loved it. What steps need to be taken to live there, and are there job/business opportunities there to make a decent living?

Really the only way to ‘make a living’ is to buy and develop land and that is very sad. if you know anything about construction or have experience in any tourism ventures you could exlpore that as well. Don’t set your expectations too high..you’ll be disappointed.

Really the best way to "establish" live is indeed to meet and marry a tica (local lady). you’ll soon be fluent in the language and her contacts can be a huge help to you in any business venture.

Before you were commit to LIVING here, you should spend at least a YEAR here. Spend time exploring the different areas and deciding what type of climate you like best…. there are many. Mountains, cooler
Beaches, hot
Forests, humid
You also need to experience the dry and rainy seasons, each lasting 6 months long. You might be okay with it hot and sunny for 1/2 the year but then realize that you just can’t handle the continuous rainfall.

There are often homes that you can rent from people that like to return to the states during the rainy season. I know of a guy who had to return to his practice back home in the states to make some money and ended up renting his home for $150 a MONTH!! There are a LOT of those type of opportunites here….

Come back for an extended vacation and get to know some of us in different towns. make some connections..see how you REALLY like it!!

Good luck

I am leaving Playas del Coco Guanacaste and want to drive to Panama, and later into panama city. What beach can I stay at close to the border and then drive later into the city

Drive via Liberia, Limonal, Quepos and Palmar Norte to Paso Canoas and cross the border there. It will take almost 10 hours to get there.

You can get detailed driving directions from this site:

All inclusive, casino would be nice, great beaches.

Paradisus Playa Conchal
The hotel is gorgeous and the beach is beautiful!!! I strongly recommend it! I’m not too sure of the prices, but the earlier you reserve I’m sure it’s cheaper!

Good luck! :D

I think Germany will score two in a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in the opening game.

It is clear that the German team is not as strong as many others at this years world cup, however in having the home advantage and a few top quality stars they should be able to brush Costa Rica aside without too many problems!

Lucas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Ballack will all play a big part in any success the team can muster up this year – I think that Podolski and Ballack will be the goalscorers in the first game. However I cannot see the Germans getting further than the quarter-finals of the tournament!

Are tourists major targets for theifts

The majority of crime in Costa Rica is theft. Unlike the US, the violent crime rate is really really low. But they are a poor country, and Americans are viewed as being rich – at least the ones that travel out of the country to stay in the nice hotels. I have never felt threatened in Costa Rica. I find the people there as nice as can be. But you have to use your smarts just as you would anywhere else. Don’t flaunt wads of cash. Don’t wear a rolex watch. Don’t leave your laptop computer in an empty chair in a public place and go to the bathroom. That type of thing. Oh, and don’t wander around bad parts of San Jose, especially after dark. If you have any experience in traveling, Costa Rica will be a breeze for you, just use your common sense. I always lock up my passport, extra credit cards, and cash that I’m not going to need for the day. I’ve never had a problem with any of the hotel maids, but it only takes one bad apple….

i am going to drive from mississippi (meridian area) to costa rica (around san jose). how long will it take? how many miles (or km) is it? google maps isnt working for me right now… ;)
i think it would be fun to SEE everything from the CAR, not an airplane window. and i can stop and look at things on the way :)
i DO realize how difficult some of the roads will be, thank you, and i am NOT doing this alone.

You spend around a week and over 3800 kms.

Good luck

My family is from Costa Rica and I have been several times, I want to start a tour company that takes care of everything. I want a tour bus that takes tourist to their hotels and takes them to all the activities there are there.
How could I make money from this? How would you suggest I go about starting this company?

Thanks for all the help!

I envy you!!! Would LOVE to do this! It’s pretty simple to start a business there. I did a powerpoint project from school on this last semester. If you would like, I can email it to you. It has some pretty good information. Contact me through Yahoo if you would like it.

Here’s info from the first slide:

Request a permit to operate from the Ministry of Health.
Request a Municipal License.
Must have Resident Agent, normally Costa Rican attorney.
Must undergo environmental impact evaluation.
