My wife and I travel to CR every year in August and have never had any trouble with sickness. We travel to the most remote parts of the country as well. I would however caution you about going to the Caribbean side in the wet season, as it will probably rain on you the entire time you are there. We visited once during August and it literally never stopped raining.
References :
Personal Experience

The dry season is usually Nov. thru May, but normally June and July are still not as wet as Aug. and Sept. The north coast is always a little dryer than the rest of the country. By going in July you avoid the tourist crush and and high prices that go with it. The time of year is the reason you got the good package price. As far as illness, malaria, dengue fever and dysentery are present all seasons, there are just more mosquitoes during the wet season that help spread malaria and dengue. You can avoid malaria with a prophylaxis such as chloroquine, that you start taking a couple of weeks before your trip, both malaria and dengue by wearing long clothing, using mosquito nets at night and repellent. Both types of dysentery usually are contracted from drinking contaminated water, eating unwashed raw fruits and veggies, or can be passed from person to person who fail to wash their own hands. Not to worry so much. Take a few mosquito precautions, practice normal sanitary habits and enjoy your trip.
