…cont.
Currently, the most dangerous slopes is the west and southwest slopes cos that’s where the rocks tumble down and also get the odd Pyroclastic flows.
Even if I wanted to sneak onto the slopes of Arenal anyway by myself it would not have been possible as I would’ve had a lengthy distance to walk from my hotel, plus you got a forest and valley in between to deal with before you finally get onto the slopes.

Hey, I could’ve gone on Arenal with somebody from OVSICORI-UNA but like I said my contact (who has strong links with Arenal Observatory Lodge) emailed me too late, and yes you are right, every volcano is different. As for breaking the law, I was told that foreigners would usually get off with a warning if caught and only the Costarricenses would get it more harshly…but this is not to say it’s ok to go into the prohibited area.

5- If you go with someone who actually knows what he is doing, unlike Geoff, and has a permit, like those from OVSICORI, then its “ok” but still risky. However, I doubt that the permit would allow him to bring in friends who are not even geologists, so he might also be breaking the law.
6- Say whatever you want, just don’t say “leave Geoff alone!”

4- You could have been up to a 100 volcanoes, it doesnt mean anything… don’t be silly. Each one of them is different. Arenal is on the top 10 most active in the world, many accidents have happened there, and all are because stupid people like uncle Geoff want cool pictures. It has never happened to anyone serious from OVSICORI or other organizations.

3- If something happens to “Geoff” people would have to risk their lives to save his ass. If it were up to me, I would let his ass burn up there and die, but since things don’t work like that, some innocent people could end up hurt or dead.

@powerclan
I was a ranger at Arenal and I know what I am talking about.
1- Geoff Mackley doesn’t know anything. He even states at the end that he went thru 2 active lava paths, being narrowly missed by avalanches of hot rocks…. and with an inexpert guide. What a donkey.
2- That area is restricted. Geoff doesn’t work for the government nor he had a permit, therefore he is breaking the law.

volcanoes are alright as long as you know what you’re doing

@kandalfsabayon
I removed my original comment cos I overreacted there.
I’m sure Geoff Mackley knows what he’s doing as it’s his job to make films like this one and I’m sure he’s well aware of the risks and makes the necessary preparations before his expeditions.
I’ve been up 8 volcanoes myself and I even narrowly missed a rare opportunity to go on the slopes of Arenal Volcano with a guy from OVSICORI-UNA because my contact emailed me too late.

You people are stupid. Several guys have died in the past doing this crazy shit. You cant expect the volcano to always be throwing rocks in the same side… what if a big eruption happened right when you are up there? Asses on fire.
If something happened to you, and you were able to call for help, people would have to go rescue you and risk their lives just cause you are a bunch of imbeciles. Next time try jumping inside the crater, the world would just be better without you.

Nice one for uploading this! I plan to goto Costa Rica in october and I hope to get away with climbing a little bit of Arenal. Apparently the rocks are currently falling to the southwest…that was the north face you climbed. I remember seeing your pics a while ago on your website.
There is another video on Youtube of someone climbing Arenal and he went past that plane wreckage, he actually reached the summit too. He drawn me the route he took.
