are there good cheap hotels in costa rica?
I want to go to Costa Rica in December. Where can I get good hotel deals on both coasts. Do I need to make reservations or can I move about freely from day to day?

Beside the fact December is the holiday season it is also the prime time for touristism. Depending of where you plan to go, I would get reservations. However, you can move freely since tourism is down, but do not expect any great deals because of the season. Hostels and Bed and Breakfasts are always fairly reasonable.
Below are a couple of links to see what you are dealing with

Hey,
It really depends when you go in December, if you’re coming for the week of Xmas and New Year, chances are the majority of the hotels are booked already.
Let me know when you’re coming and I can help you better.

But, if it is during the holiday week then I would say no.

the cost of hotels is considerably less for abasic, clean establishment in costa rica than in many other countries, but CR is still one of the more expensive latin american countries. I spen a year backpacking around the country and had no problem finding a place each night without prior reservations, That said, I speak spanish, and did not have an unrealistic expectation to go in a high season such as christmas weeke expecting free avaialability at low cost. Travelling in early december without reservations hould not pose a problem for you, but during the last weeks of the year most places will be booked. My small boutique hotel is already sold out for christmas and new years

For that time of year, (absolute peak period) I would certainly recommend booking in advance so you make sure you have somewhere to stay. It can sometimes be difficult to find anywhere decent last minute in a place as popular as that so I would recommend using Budget Flights to source accommodation prices as they search over 30+ online hotel websites at once.
