I haven't see any cockroach in the hotels I've been in CR.

I live in Costa Rica, and that story is not as terrible as your comment. My house is 8 months old and I usually have it clean. ONly one cockroach in those 8 months... What do you think now?

Don´t believe everything you hear or read, many times people exagerate or make up stuff.
Cockroaches are not much of a problem in Cota Rica, unless you stay in a shack, you might have some trouble with ants if you leave unwrapped food outside of the fridge.

When I lived in Costa Rica I got a house from someone who was a total slob. I saw all kinds of wild life when I was cleaning it, but few roaches.
References :
Gosh, I have travelled all over Costa Rica and have never had a problem with cockroaches- though I have to tell you that the ants are crazy! There are these tiny little ants that come out of nowhere. Everywhere that we have stayed as been pretty bug free. The folks at mycostaricalink.com were really helpful at putting me up at places that were clean and in my budget and I had virtually no pest problem - except the time I left some food out and woke up to a sea of midget ants! But that was my fault! I think you can be free from freaking if you contact Lynn at 866-498-0824- they are in Costa Rica and know all of the cool (and clean) places that will make your trip bug (and nightmare) free.
References :
mycostaricalink.com

Dont worry man, there is such thing in CR as pest control. All the hotels fumigate for the high season and this is the begining of the tourist high season. Unless you stay in a cheap crappy place.

I have been to CR a few times and honestly never seen a cock roach. I'm sure they are probably there, and all of my travels have been in the Guanacaste state, generally near the ocean, but I've never seen a roach, so I would definitely NOT say they "are all over the place".
References :
In all honesty, I can't remember ever seeing a cockroach in any of my hostels / hotels in CR. The worst problem we had was ants. Don't leave any food out - you'll have ants within a couple of hours. But if you stay in a reasonably nice hotel, you shouldn't have any problem with it. The last place I stayed was Costa Verde in Manual Antonio. It butts right up against the National Park so you'd think if any place would have a bug problem they would, but no roaches.
www.costaverde.com - if you are interested (and we stayed in one of the open air rooms - and still no roaches.
References :
Robert,

It's a fact that any place warm year round will have an active cockroach population. It's also a fact that any building that receives deliveries of food will be exposed to cockroaches. And finally, any building that invites people from around the world to unpack personal items and stay days at a time will be ground zero for traveling bugs.

Any hotel South of the North American frost-line will have all of these properties. The key question is not if the hotel has cockroaches, but how active the hotel management is in working to mitigate the little buggers.

Find a clean hotel, keep your luggage zipped-up and enjoy your stay in beautiful Costa Rica ... with the confidence of knowing all living animals (insects or otherwise) still have their own predators to worry about ;o)
