Going to costa rica in 2 weeks. Where is the best beach to learn how to surf, relax, with nicer hotels?

I’ve never surfed, so looking for beg. waves and good instruction. My wife and I are going, so don’t want to rough it too much, but don’t necessarily want a resort experience either. Will have 3-4 days and willing to fly to/from San Jose to the beach. Thanks!

Hi, Tamarindo is a great place. But since you have such a short period of time, you can also drive to Playa Hermosa, near Jaco, it’s internationally known for the surf breaks, and in Jaco there are a bunch of schools, rental shops and everything you can imagine surf:)

I know you’re willing to fly and stuff. But even so, if you fly to Tamarindo it will take you about 4 hours with everything. Playa Hermosa is 2 hours.

Hope this helps,

In my opinion the best two places to learn to surf are Tamarindo and Samara. I am not a surfer but I direct a summer study abroad program in Costa Rica and these spots have consistently come on top for my students (this is my 11th summer). You can check out hotels in both places via the web. Samara is quieter with less night life and eating options but I think the beach is nicer for walking and bathing.
