What is the price range for staying at an older, but clean and safe hotel in San Jose Costa Rica?
and do some of them offer weekly or monthly rates?

Hotel Santo Thomas is a great hotel in San Jose – very clean and close to shopping. Staff is excellent and food is the greatest. Went in February and rooms were $60 per nite with a pool and jacuzzi.

I wouldn’t stay in San Jose if I were you. Try Escazu or Santa Ana. Those are clean, safe, nice communities in the mountains just outside San Jose. They are where all the gringos live and are close to shopping, restaurants, etc. Expect to pay $50+ per night, but it’s worth it not to stay in San Jose because violence is increasing in SJ no matter what neighborhood you stay in.

I would go to JACO Beach.. it is a lot safer.. and alot more fun especially if you are a male.. soo many activities.

You don’t have to run to Escazu (”US south”) to be safe. Escazu is grossly overpriced.
Barrio Amon is a relatively safe area of SJ. There are several nice hotels at decent prices. Many Americans stay there.

If you are looking for longer term deals, try an aparthotel. A place that rents apartments by the week or month. I’ve stayed here about 8-10 times whenever I go for a week or more. They have a relatively new (~3 yrs old) apartment building. A standrad studio is perfect for 1 person, it even has a kitchen for $210/wk or $490/month. a ton of Americans stay there. It’s an 8 minute cab ride (or 30 minute walk during the day) to ave. central downtown.
