In an unprecedented event Occidental Hotels and Allegro Resorts, an all inclusive resorts group, has filed a federal lawsuit against one of its former guests for posting the facts about a dismal stay at one of their resorts in an online website. The Hotel group based in Spain has no offices in the United States and operates in several countries but claims no U. S presence therefore American guests who suffer indignities, injuries, and several deaths, have difficulty with legal remedies. One such guest who had a dismal stay at the Occidental Xcaret in Mexico after Hotel management made it clear they could care less about their guests comfort and satisfaction constructed a website that former guests could post their bad experiences online. Carter Hargrave a resident of Oklahoma who now owns the website occidentalhotels dedicated to informing people of the poor treatment he and his wife received as well as the un believable treatment the family of a little boy who died at the same resorts swimming pool after being sucked into a huge uncovered drain pipe (Note Photo). “The death of Brent Midlock at Occidental was the last straw and I knew I had to have a public forum. That little boy was down in that pool for 16 hours before they pulled him up, and then Occidental Hotels would not even help the family get his body home; The family had to actually pay three thousand dollars before his body would be released and it just gets worse from there”, said Hargrave. “There are a couple of bright sides in this sad experience; one they keep loosing every legal battle. First was for the domain name and they lost. Second they filed a frivolous lawsuit in Illinois when they had no office, business, or jurisdiction there, claiming trademark infringement when their trademark had been cancelled years ago by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “They are just a nightmare of a company to attack a former guest with lawsuits for exercising the American First Amendment free speech rights. Whats next, going after negative posts on trip advisor?As of this date the lawsuit filed in Illinois has been dismissed by the judge for lack of jurisdiction and will be transferred to the former guests home state. When traveling to a foreign resort such as Occidental and Allegro, or any of them really, just do your homework for you and your family’s safety. Its clear with some of these companies you are on your own if something goes wrong.

Though hotels are all similar in that they all have beds and other accommodations to make staying there much more homelike, there are some very unique hotels in various parts of the world that challenge the concept of the traditional hotel.
The unique treetop hotels in Costa Rica, Kenya and other parts of the world where the hotels are built with very large living trees making up a substantial part of the hotel structure. The treetop hotel in Kenya is built into the trees surrounding a watering hole for the many species of animals that forage there. When you leave the main dining room to go back to your room you are always accompanied by a guard for protection from wild predators. The Ariau Towers in Brazil, near the city of Manaus is in the middle of the Amazon on the Rio Negro and is a similar type of living tree hotel.
Ariau Amazon Towers is another unique hotel, located 35 miles from Manaus, Brazil where the Rio Negro and Ariau Creek meet. Built entirely at the level of the Rainforest Canopy, Ariau’s towers are linked together by 4 miles of strong wooden catwalks. This architectural wonder affords visitors a unique communion with the regions teeming plant and animal life while leaving the fragile eco-system completely undisturbed. Bill gates invested in the hotel and had modern telephone / internet connections installed.
Straight out of Neromancer, the Sci-Fi book by William Gibson, but only for the Japanese as of yet, the unique capsule hotels are an economy type of hotel with extremely high occupancy capabilities. Most capsule hotel compartments are only about 6 ½ feet by 4 feet by a little over 3 feet. These hotels are not recommended for large or very tall people. This amount of space certainly gives one enough room to read or sleep, but not much else. Of course if you’ve got wireless internet the possibilities are considerably expanded.
Capsule hotels are not necessarily frequented primarily by lower income people, but are used by many types of people for many different reasons. For about $25-34 per night, a tired working person who stayed out too late drinking and missed the last train can get a night’s rest. There are often discount rates for those wishing to nap for only a couple of hours during the day.
There are several cave hotels throughout the world in such places as Australia, Spain, Turkey, the United States and several other countries. Rooms in cave hotels typically have the entire walls or even two or three walls made out of the mountain or other hard sediment formation that the hotel is built into.
For instance there is the cave hotel in Southern Australia, an Underground hotel and casino, in Coober Pedy.
The Desert Cave Hotel allows you to experience dug-out style living, underground shops, bar and opal display areas. Sleeping underground is a very unique experience. Quiet, cool, dark and airy, the rooms seem spacious with their high ceilings.

The Utter Inn located in Lake Malaren, Sweden features one large room and visitors can simply walk down into the hotel while viewing underwater. This same company also has an undersea lodge in Key Largo, Florida that does require scuba diving to reach.
The Utter (Otter) Inn in Sweden is a small floating house with a deck for sunning. Its uniqueness is that you descend the stairs into the lake. The bedroom is like an aquarium but you are the fish. There is an inflatable boat so that you can visit a near by un-inhabited island to swim and sun. You will have to buy the deluxe package to have dinner delivered to you (by boat, of course) in the evening.

In the ever-evolving world of international travel, cookie cutter resorts with lagoon-sized swimming pools are losing favor among savvy travelers, in favor of smaller, more intimate boutique hotels which tend to better capture the essence of a travel destination.

For the longest time, cruise liners and all-inclusive resorts ruled the world of travel. It was a kingdom of all-you-can-eat buffets, perfectly-aligned rows of beach chairs, and identical bedrooms that catered to a families, couples, and single travelers alike: assuring that no matter where you were in the world, the same generic amenities would be at your front door.

This industry trend was fueled by a certain generation: one which had revolutionary access to better modes of transportation as well as exposure to increased globalization. Combined, these two factors spawned new air routes from the USA. They opened up new corridors into the Caribbean, they branched largely into Europe, and they did so in such a convenient (or accessible) fashion that packaged deals including transportation, room, and board became the way of the future.

This was a generation new to the international scene. It was one which rarely spoke second languages nor associated much with foreign culture, so it only made sense that travel offers accommodated this hesitancy: making an art trip to France or a vacation to the Bahamas as easy and non-worrisome as the click of a button.

Today though, travelers have evolved. And it is the decline of traditional packaged tour offers that has given way, almost predictably, to the phrase “boutique travel” which focuses more on cultural immersion and the uniqueness or authenticity of a destination, rather than remaining comfortably humdrum in a comfort zone.

New travel hot spots in Central America such as Panama and Columbia in addition to already-proven ones like Costa Rica and Mexico are working proof of the success and potential of boutique travel.

Scan the coast of Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio region where the cliff-based boutique hotels pop up subtly from the rainforest. Or at Boca Chica, Panama, where the coast is dotted not with giant spanning condo buildings, but with low-impact eco-hotels.

Perhaps the best example of old-world travel tendencies contrasting with new-fangled boutique trends is the quiet region of Tulum, Mexico which sits just miles away from the overly-developed Cancun. Nowhere are the contrasts so stark between grandiose development catering to an older, more hesitant generation and subtle sophistication playing host to today’s movers and shakers of international travel.

On the white sand beaches, a number of Tulum hotels are packed to the brim with vacationers slung on hammocks or wading in the warm Caribbean ocean. But this is most certainly a different type of vacation: one not of sterile and captive experiences, but rather new and innovative surroundings.

Having Visited Costa Rica, I have compiled a list of hotels and inns that are noteworthy. This list is by no means comprehensive or complete, it is just a few hotels that I have either stayed at or had the pleasure of dealing with.
Arenal Volcano Inn
Arenal Volcano Inn is located 6. 5 kilometer north of the catholic church of La Fortuna town. Arenal is a must visit destination for a Costa Rica vacation. Many hotels surround the Arenal Volcano, but few offer such well planned and distributed rooms as Arenal Volcano Inn. Distributed on a hill completely surrounded by nature guaranteeing its guest an impressive view to the Arenal Volcano. The rooms are warm and inviting giving its guest tranquility and peace of mind while enjoying the beauty that surrounds them.
