Visitor Information

we are students who are going to be in costa rica during march. only one of us has a license, so we may take public transport everywhere. how long does it take to get to drake bay from monteverde by bus? are there better options that are not too expensive?

I am going to Costa Rica and my friend wanted to know what I wanted to do in Monteverde (she lives in Costa Rica this year) so any ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Monteverde, Costa Rica by TravelPod blogger Epijuarez titled “Monteverde”. TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Epijuarez’s travel blog entry: “This place was great! We arrived in the early afternoon and found our way to the hotel. We immediately checked out the tours so we could get signed up for the next day. There are so many different tours that they offer here, but we chose to go on a nature hike the next morning and to do the canopy tour in the cloud forests of Monteverde in the afternoon. We booked our tours then decided to visit the butterfly garden and frog ponds later that day. The butterfly garden was impressive and we saw a lot of beautiful butterflies that flew around you and landed on you throughout the whole tour. It was a bit strange because you can see them up close and they stick there tongues on you and it tickles and looks a bit creepy, but all in all, it was pretty incredible. We returned later that evening as we were told that the frogs were generally more active in the evenings. They did not tell us that we could actually visit the frog ponds in the day and return in the evening, but that was ok. The frogs were incredible!! We took a guided tour of the frog ponds and our guide was great. He was able to find frogs in all but one of the exhibits and he even made some croaking noises that some of the frogs responded to. Inside this place it is pitch dark and you have to find the frogs by

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica

One of the best things in Costa Rica is to go on one of its rain forest and wildlife vacations. Despite the country’s small size, Costa Rica’s area encompasses highly reputable biological reserves, refuges and national parks. Its rainforests consists of hundreds of various species known to man. The rainforest houses exotic flora and fauna and is one of Central America’s bio-diverse countries with 10, 000 different classes of species. The Monteverde is one of the most outstanding and popular Costa Rican rainforest destinations. A small town in Puntarenas, Monteverde is also known as “Green Mountain” in Spanish and known to contain the country’s largest wildlife reserve. Despite how arduous its trail can be for tourists, it has become part of the Costa Rican tourist trail. It’s said to contain the Monteverde Cloud Forest which attracts more than 70,000 tourists and visitors yearly. It is called a cloud forest or fog forest rather than a rain forest because of the moist that’s created due to its high altitude. The cloud forests are known to have abundance in mosses that’s why most of the trees and ground are considered mossy. The 10, 500 hectare of the Monteverde Cloud Forest made it the largest reserve in Costa Rica and is a perfect example of what Costa Rica nature can offer to the world. This private sanctuary was discovered and created by George Powell and Quaker Guindon who were both scientists exploring the rainforests in Costa Rica. Also famous for housing 500 species of orchids in the world with 34 of these just newly discovered. It’s considered home to various species such as howler monkeys, snakes and birds. Of course it’s not a surprise that mostly tourists visit the cloud forest to get a glimpse of the Resplendent Quetzal. The quetzal is known as the most spectacular bird in the new world and also for its magnificent plumage. It’s seen more frequently from December through June in the Costa Rican rainforests so avid bird watcher’s should definitely take note of the quetzal peak seasons. The Costa Rica rain forest is also said to contain the Emerald Toucanet also known as the endangered Bellbird. The bellbird is another exotic species of birds that bird watchers wouldn’t want to miss. This green mid-sized bird with a blue colored throat is visible in higher elevated wet forests usually on top of tree canopies. Another famous reserve called the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve borders the Monteverde Conservation area in the Cordillera de Tilarán of Central Costa Rica. Its 765 acres of land was originally leased by the Santa Elena Community High School of Monteverde which was then developed into a cloud forest reserve back in 1989. This reserve is considered cloudier and wetter compared to other reserves because of its higher altitude. The Santa Elena community developed the reserve because of their determination to preserve the beautiful environment surrounding them. Tourism is then used as a means to maintain the preservation of the cloud forest. Though, the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve receives lesser visitors, it features a great view of the Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano.

Hotel Capital in San Jose, Costa Rica -

Hey Everyone! On this visit to San Jose we decided to try and do it on the cheap and see what hotels and hostels were BEST for backpackers and people traveling Costa Rica on a budget, while still getting a bang for the buck.

We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Capital. Hotel Capital boasts the best location in all of San Jose, were they right? Is it all about location, location, location, and what about the orthopedic beds… would they be ideal for a good nights sleep or would it be like sleeping on a piece of cardboard? The Hotel Capital was only $28./ night for the both of us… was it worth it, would we recommend Hotel Capital to our friends and family? Check out this video and see if Hotel Capital is all that and more.
