Costa Rica Travel-San Jose to Manuel Antonio?
I have been reading through all the answers but have decided to ask myself a few questions. My fiance and I are traveling to Costa Rica for our honeymoon in October. My questions are all about transportation. I would ideally like to be picked up from the San Jose airport and be dropped off at our hotel in manual antonio. In order to do this, do you have to take a private bus or a taxi or rent a car? I have heard I shouldn’t rent a car, but wasn’t sure about a taxi if that would be safe? or the public bus? I am just concerned about safety and convenience that money is not an issue.
Thanks!
Also, traveling by air is not an option for us because I already know I would be way over my travel limit of 25 pounds.
I never rent a car when I go to CR. The driving is much different than in the states, and it makes me very nervous. You can take a taxi from the airport if you wish. The laws have gotten very strict about gypsy cabs and all the cabs at the airport are licensed and regulated.
My personal favorite is for the private shuttle. They meet you outside the airport with your name on a sign, load your luggage and take you to your hotel. On the way to Manual Antonio, they make a pit stop around the halfway point to use the bathroom, pick up refreshments and take a peak over the bridge to see the crocodiles.
It makes it nice because you don’t have to worry about navigation or pot holes and you can really enjoy the scenery on the way. This is the company that I use:

rent a car… not expensive… a simple car,get a map nd try 2 c if the agency has a chofer also. If u get a taxi they will know ur not fronm Costa Rica they will charge u a bunch…or more because ur not familiar with the rates. Travel in the bus when u get a safe advice of someone that works in the hotel that inspires u trust of where to go in the bus nd dont wear jewlery
Im from Costa Rica! have fun people r normaly very kind!!!

Hi ! first of the all CONGRATS on your upcoming wedding. And by the way and excellent country to be on your honeymoon!
About your questions, I should say do not use public transportation because it will definitely take you longer.
And think it carefully , if you are going on your honeymoon to any place in the world wouldn’t be easier to have a local person to drive you around? , I mean, a local would know better the roads, good places to eat, excellent picture spots , etc . just been honest, if you have never been in a place it maybe helps to have a map but you could get lost and with a 45 minutes delay.
So, think it twice, if you need a good driver here is the name of a nice young gentleman that would help you and your future wife while in Costa Rica Fabio Molina at info@arenaldestination.com
Good Luck and have fun!

Read on the Internet either amcostarica.com or theticotimes.net. Both have ads providing car hire. You can probably arrange through the internet a car hire. You should avoid car rentals if possible. You may want to arrange a car hire for your whole trip, or do it day by day. Most days you will not need a car much, use buses and taxis.
You can get a taxi at the airport without any reservation and it will be reasonably safe, the drivers are all licensed and have to provide a photo ID visible to the passengers. THe real protection is that taxi drivers themselves try to protect their profitable jobs and run off people not approved to work the airport taxi stand. AND the fares are standardized for long trips. THey may chose to use the meter, it will cost more. ANd do not be stingy, give a decent tip- in dollars.

It is very easy to grab a taxi at the airport, there is an official taxi office where you can feel comfortable about the whole process. I have been there many times and always just grab a taxi there. Incidentally I find it almost always easy to arrange for travel once you are in the country, but thats just my style of travel. Nonetheless since its your first time and it is your honeymoon just take a taxi and don’t bother driving (can easily be done but why bother). If you find you really want a care, its easy to rent in Manuel Antonio or nearby Quepos.

Hi,
If money isn’t a big issue, I’d hire a private service, it’s about $175 to go to Manual Antonio. You’ll be in comfort and with a little bit of a guide tour on the way!
However, contrary to what people are saying about renting a car here, the roads are in great condition, it’s totally safe to drive around. Plus, if you do detour or get lost, most Ticos speak english and are very helpful.
Benefits of a car, you have more freedom and it’s actually cheaper.
Hope this helps,
